Free Shopify Survey Apps: What You Actually Get (and What's Paywalled)

Every survey app on the Shopify App Store advertises a free plan or trial. Most of those free plans are demos wearing a free plan's clothes: enough to see the interface, not enough to learn anything from your customers. The difference is in four specific limits that listings rarely make obvious.

This guide covers what to check, what a $0 program can honestly achieve, and when paying becomes the right call.

The four paywalls that matter

1. The response cap. The headline limit. A cap of 25 to 50 responses a month is a demo: at typical thank-you page response rates, that's a few days of data for a store doing a few hundred orders a month, too little to read a channel split from. A cap of 100+ responses is enough to run a real monthly attribution or NPS read for a smaller store. Do the math against your order volume and the response rate benchmarks before assuming any cap works for you.

2. Placement limits. Some free tiers restrict you to a single surface, usually the thank-you page. That's fine for attribution, but it locks you out of post-delivery questions (NPS, product satisfaction), which need the order status page. Check whether both web placements are included, and whether POS exists at any tier if you have retail.

3. Logic and targeting. The quiet one. Branching (follow-up questions based on an answer) and targeting (first-time buyers see the discovery question, repeat buyers see the loyalty question) are what separate a survey program from a poll. Free plans that strip these force every customer through the same generic question, which caps what you can learn no matter how many responses you collect. The best practices guide explains why these two features carry so much weight.

4. Data export. Can you get your responses out? Export locked behind a paid tier is reasonable (analysis is a power feature), but check that the free tier at least shows you full responses in the dashboard, not just aggregate charts. Portability also matters the day you switch tools.

A fifth check that isn't a paywall: how the app is built. A free app that injects theme JavaScript costs you storefront speed forever, which is a worse price than a subscription. Native checkout extensions don't touch your theme or slow checkout, and don't require broad data scopes at install.

What a $0 program can honestly do

With a free plan that passes the four checks, a smaller store can run a genuinely useful program:

  • An attribution survey on the thank-you page, targeted at first-time customers. Two to four weeks of answers gives you a channel mix to weigh ad spend against.
  • A rotating research question when attribution has answered its question for the season: "What almost stopped you?" or "What should we make next?"
  • A basic NPS read on the order status page a few times a year, scored by hand with the NPS math.

That's most of the value of the surveys million-dollar brands run, at the scale a growing store needs it.

What free can't do

Be honest about the ceiling. A free plan won't give you always-on NPS at volume, low-score alerting to Slack, CSV exports for deeper analysis, or the response headroom of a store doing thousands of orders a month. Those are exactly the features worth paying for once the free tier has changed a decision, because at that point the program has proven it pays rent.

The upgrade trap to avoid: per-response pricing that scales against your growth. A flat paid tier means your survey bill doesn't rise because your ads worked. The app comparison guide covers pricing models alongside the rest of the evaluation checklist.

Where OrderSurvey lands

Since this is our blog, here's our own card face up. OrderSurvey's free plan includes 100 responses per 30 days, unlimited surveys, both web placements (thank-you and order status pages), conditional branching, and targeting rules. That's all four paywalls passed at $0, deliberately, because a free tier that can't run a real program is just a longer install funnel. Pro is a flat $49/month for unlimited responses, CSV export, and webhook alerts, and it costs the same whether you do one thousand or one hundred thousand orders.

For other apps' current free tiers, check their listings directly, plans change, and the four checks above will sort any of them in about two minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a genuinely free Shopify survey app?

Yes, several survey apps have free plans, but they differ sharply in what's included. Check four things before installing: the response cap, which pages you can survey, whether branching and targeting are included, and whether you can get your data out. OrderSurvey's free plan includes 100 responses per 30 days with unlimited surveys, both web placements, branching, and targeting.

What do free survey app plans usually paywall?

The common paywalls are low response caps, single-placement limits (thank-you page only), removal of branching or targeting, data export, and integrations. A free plan missing branching and targeting can't run a real program, it can only run a poll.

When should a store upgrade from a free survey plan?

When you consistently hit the response cap, need CSV export for analysis, or want alerting. If the free tier taught you something that changed a decision, the paid tier has already justified itself.
