How to Collect Customer Feedback on Shopify: 7 Methods Compared
4 min read
"Collect customer feedback" is on every ecommerce checklist, but the methods differ wildly in response rate, honesty, and effort. Most Shopify stores default to the loudest channel (reviews) or the laziest one (an annual email blast), and both have serious blind spots.
Here are the seven methods that matter, compared honestly, and how to combine them.
1. Post-purchase surveys (the workhorse)
One or two questions on the thank-you page and order status page, shown to every buyer at the moment of purchase or after delivery.
- Response rate: the highest of any method here, often 10 to 50 times email rates, because answering costs one click on a page the customer is already viewing. See real benchmarks.
- Honesty: high. Answers are anchored to a purchase that just happened, not a memory.
- Effort: ten-minute setup with a checkout-extension app, no theme code. Here's the thank-you page walkthrough.
- Blind spot: only reaches buyers. People who didn't buy never see it (method 6 covers them).
This is the method to start with, because it feeds the others: attribution answers tune your ad spend, and expectation questions catch returns before they happen.
2. Product reviews
The public channel. Reviews are marketing assets first and feedback second, but the text is genuinely useful for spotting recurring product issues.
- Response rate: low single digits per order without prompting.
- Honesty: polarized. Reviews over-sample the delighted and the furious; the silent middle never shows up.
- Effort: low with a review app and an automated post-delivery request.
- Blind spot: the sample bias. Never treat review sentiment as representative of all customers, that's what NPS is for.
3. NPS tracking
The recurring pulse: "How likely are you to recommend us?" (0 to 10), asked after delivery, tracked as a monthly trend. It's the cleanest single number for whether the overall experience is improving, and detractor comments are a prioritized fix list. Full setup in the Shopify NPS guide, scoring math in how to calculate NPS.
Run it on the order status page rather than email: same question, far more answers.
4. Email surveys
The traditional method, and now mostly the wrong default. Email surveys reach customers days after the experience, fight promotions-tab gravity, and convert a small fraction as well as on-page asks. They still earn their place for long-form research (10+ question studies with an incentive) and for reaching customers months after purchase, two jobs on-page surveys can't do.
5. POS feedback (retail stores only)
If you sell in person, the moment after a sale completes on Shopify POS is a feedback surface almost nobody uses: a one-tap question on the POS screen while the customer is standing there. Response friction is near zero and the answers capture in-store experience that web surveys never see.
6. Support ticket and chat mining
Free, always-on, and brutally honest: nobody writes to support to be polite. A monthly hour tagging tickets by theme (sizing, shipping, product defect, confusion) produces a ranked list of what's actually breaking. The blind spot is severity bias, you only hear about problems bad enough to prompt a message, so pair it with survey data for proportions.
7. Customer interviews
Five 20-minute calls with recent customers will teach you things no survey can, especially the why behind patterns you've spotted elsewhere. High effort, tiny sample, zero statistical power, enormous depth. Recruit interviewees from survey respondents who left thoughtful open-text answers, they've already shown they'll talk.
The stack that works for most stores
You don't need all seven. The combination that covers a Shopify store's actual decisions:
- Always-on: a thank-you page attribution survey plus post-delivery NPS (the starter pair), and automated review requests.
- Monthly habit: an hour of support mining, and reading every NPS detractor comment the day it lands (follow up fast).
- Quarterly burst: a rotating research question on-page, and a handful of interviews when a big decision (new product, repositioning) needs depth.
That stack costs almost nothing and covers acquisition, product, and retention feedback without annoying anyone. The survey layer, methods 1, 3, and 5 plus the rotating question, all runs in OrderSurvey, free up to 100 responses a month.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to collect customer feedback on Shopify?
For most stores, a one-question survey on the thank-you page is the best starting point: it reaches every buyer at the moment of highest engagement, requires no email deliverability, and gets the highest response rate of any feedback channel.
How do I add a feedback survey to my Shopify store?
Install a survey app that uses native checkout extensions, build your question, and add the survey block to the thank-you and order status pages in the checkout editor. No theme code is required, and setup takes about ten minutes.
Is customer feedback on Shopify free to collect?
Several methods cost nothing but time: mining support tickets, reading reviews, and Shopify's native review request. Survey apps typically have free tiers; OrderSurvey's free plan includes 100 responses a month with unlimited surveys.
