Shopify Surveys: The Complete Guide to Every Type, Surface, and Question

"Shopify surveys" covers a lot of ground: different pages, different questions, different moments in the customer journey, and tools that range from a one-click poll to a research questionnaire. This guide maps the whole territory, every surface you can survey on, every question type worth asking, and which combination fits which job, with links to deeper guides for each.

The five survey surfaces on Shopify

1. The order confirmation page (thank-you page). The page a customer sees seconds after paying. This is the highest response rate surface in ecommerce: the customer is engaged, on your site, and the purchase is seconds old. Attribution, friction, and purchase-intent questions belong here. Here's the step-by-step setup.

2. The order status page. The page customers revisit to track shipping, which makes it the natural home for questions that need delivery to happen first: satisfaction, NPS, product feedback. Setup guide here, and the thank-you vs order status comparison covers which questions go where.

3. Shopify POS. If you sell in person, a one-tap question on the POS screen right after the sale captures in-store feedback web surveys never see. It's the least crowded surface in the entire channel. How POS surveys work.

4. Email. The traditional method, now mostly outperformed: email surveys arrive days late and convert a small fraction as well as on-page asks. They still earn their place for long research questionnaires and for reaching customers months after purchase.

5. On-site widgets. Popups and embedded polls for pre-purchase visitors. Useful for site feedback, but they interrupt shopping and sample lookers rather than buyers. Most stores get more from post-purchase surfaces first.

Shopify checkout surveys: what's actually allowed

A common question with a precise answer: you cannot inject a survey into the payment steps of checkout. Shopify restricts what renders during checkout itself, and interrupting a buyer mid-payment costs conversion no matter what you learn. What merchants actually mean by "checkout survey" is a survey at the end of checkout, on the order confirmation page, and that placement is fully supported via native checkout extensions: no theme code, no impact on checkout speed, and no broad data scopes required.

Surveys by goal

Marketing channel surveys (attribution). "How did you hear about us?" on the order confirmation page. Since iOS 14, ad platforms each overclaim credit for the same orders; the customer is the only honest source. Two weeks of answers gives you a channel mix you can rebalance spend against. Start with the attribution survey guide, tune the answer options, then turn responses into channel ROI decisions.

NPS surveys. "How likely are you to recommend us?" (0 to 10) on the order status page after delivery. Track the monthly trend, read every detractor comment, and follow up with detractors within a day, which is where the metric turns into retention. Full program in the Shopify NPS guide, scoring in how to calculate NPS, context in what counts as a good ecommerce NPS.

CSAT and product feedback. Satisfaction questions scoped to one stage: shipping speed, packaging, match-to-description, fit. Low match-to-description scores predict returns before they're filed. The 30-question ecommerce bank covers every stage, and NPS vs CSAT vs CES explains which metric fits which decision.

Exit surveys. On Shopify, "exit survey" usually means an exit-intent popup asking why a visitor is leaving without buying. They sample the hardest audience (people mid-departure) and response quality shows it. The higher-signal alternative: ask buyers "What almost stopped you from buying today?" on the confirmation page. Every answer is the same objection an exit survey hunts for, collected from someone engaged enough to answer honestly. If cart abandonment is the worry, this question plus your analytics beats a popup.

Research and product questions. "What should we make next?", "What did you compare us to?", "Who is this order for?" Run these in targeted bursts. The zero-party data guide covers why these answers are the safest data you can collect, and the surveys million-dollar brands run shows the full pattern stack.

Making any of them work

Four rules carry every survey type, and the best practices guide expands all of them:

  1. One question per moment. Completion collapses with length; branch for depth instead.
  2. Match question to surface. Purchase-moment questions on the confirmation page, post-delivery questions on the order status page, in-person questions at POS.
  3. Target by segment. First-timers get discovery questions, repeat buyers get loyalty questions. That's segmentation.
  4. Act monthly. Judge against response rate benchmarks, and change one real thing per month from what you read. That habit is the voice-of-customer loop.

Picking a survey app

Shopify has no built-in survey tool, so the surfaces above are reached through an app. The evaluation checklist: native checkout extensions (not theme scripts), both web placements plus POS if you have retail, conditional branching and targeting, data export, and flat pricing that doesn't scale against your growth. The app comparison guide walks the criteria, the free plan guide covers what $0 gets you, and OrderSurvey runs every surface and question type in this guide, free up to 100 responses a month.

Frequently asked questions

What types of surveys can you run on Shopify?

Five surfaces: the order confirmation (thank-you) page, the order status page, Shopify POS for in-store sales, email after delivery, and on-site widgets. The most effective for most stores are one-question surveys on the order confirmation and order status pages, which reach every buyer at the moment of highest engagement.

Can you put a survey inside Shopify checkout?

Not in the payment steps. Shopify restricts what can render during checkout itself, and interrupting payment hurts conversion anyway. The compliant placement merchants mean by 'checkout survey' is the order confirmation page, immediately after payment completes, where survey apps can render natively.

What is the best survey question for a Shopify store?

If you only ask one: 'How did you hear about us?' on the order confirmation page, targeted at first-time customers. It corrects ad platform attribution, which no other data source can do, and it gets the highest response rate of any survey type.

Does Shopify have built-in surveys?

No. Shopify provides the surfaces (checkout extensibility, the order status page, POS extensions) but not a survey tool. You add one via an app; look for native checkout extensions, no theme code, and no broad data scopes at install.
